What is the IB Diploma Programme?

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP) is an internationally recognised educational programme for students aged 16 to 19. It first launched in 1968. In fact, it was the very first programme offered by the International Baccalaureate organisation.

Its goal is simple. Specifically, the programme develops students with deep knowledge and critical thinking skills. Moreover, it focuses on well-rounded growth — physical, intellectual, emotional and ethical. As a result, students who complete the programme go on to university at higher rates than those from other educational systems.

Who is it for?

The programme is open to students aged 16 to 19. However, it’s only available at schools authorised to deliver it. Today, public and private schools all over the world offer the IB DP.

How it works: The curriculum

The curriculum has two main parts. First, six subject groups. Second, the DP core.

Specifically, the core includes three compulsory components:

  • Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
  • Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)
  • Extended Essay (EE)

Through these components, students explore the nature of knowledge. They also conduct independent research. Finally, they undertake projects that often involve community service.

Assessment and exams

The International Baccalaureate organisation assesses student performance. Specifically, it sets clear objectives for each subject. In addition, the IB Diploma Programme exams are recognised by the world’s leading universities.

Coming to Greek Model Schools

From September 2026, the IB Diploma Programme officially enters 13 Model Schools (Πρότυπα Σχολεία) across Greece. This marks a milestone for Greek education. Specifically, students in public schools will earn an internationally recognised diploma for the first time. As a result, this opportunity now exists within the public education system.

This development opens new doors for thousands of Greek students. Moreover, it creates new needs. For example, schools require fresh educational materials, tools and support. Teachers who will deliver the programme also need preparation and resources.

The approved calculator for IB exams

Students need an approved graphing calculator for IB exams. Specifically, the CASIO FX-CG50 is the model used and permitted in the examinations. In addition, it is the only graphing calculator approved for use.

The FX-CG50 offers over 20 built-in functions. For instance, it includes 3D graphs and built-in Python. It also covers statistics and probability distribution calculations. At the same time, it features a dedicated Exam Mode. As a result, certain functions are temporarily disabled during examinations.
